Canada has announced a new accelerated immigration pathway designed specifically for professionals currently working in the United States under the H-1B visa program. This development forms part of the government’s wider effort to attract global talent, support the country’s innovation economy, and fill critical labour shortages across sectors such as technology, engineering, scientific research, healthcare, and advanced industries.
The accelerated pathway is expected to provide a more predictable and faster process for skilled workers who want to transition from temporary U.S. status into long-term opportunities in Canada. With increasing challenges surrounding the H-1B system in the United States—rising visa fees, policy uncertainty, and limited routes to permanent residency—many professionals have been searching for more stable alternatives. As part of this strategy, the Canadian government is investing CA$1.7 billion to recruit over 1,000 international researchers over the coming years. Additionally, Canada is establishing a Foreign Credential Recognition Action Fund, with CA$97 million allocated over five years, to help expedite the recognition of international qualifications.
